Raising Consciousness by: Khadija Khan
Most difficult thing I found in knowledge management is to make people write or share their experiences and reflections. Managers are busy planning, directing, attending meetings, communicating and overseeing implementation, and therefore they hardly sit down for a while to reflect on what they are doing. Many experienced and learned colleagues leave the organization without passing on their wisdom to their successors due to time constraint, lack of inspiration or for fear that the new comer might consider it patronizing. Realizing this missing opportunity, I have recently started to arrange a special sitting with the colleague who is due to depart or retire and listen to his/her stories. It is a very enriching activity as while the person appreciates attention, I get the best of his/her reflections to understand the way things have been happening in his/her world.
